Useful tips on finding nannies

A nanny job can be a very flexible and rewarding career. Generally speaking a nanny works for a family and has responsibility for looking after the children and taking care of their needs, such as cooking their meals, supervising homework, bringing and collecting them from school, as well as taking them to extra curricular activities. Depending on the requirements of the family, some nannies work as nanny housekeepers and they have extra tasks associated with house-hold duties such as cleaning, washing, shopping etc.

Working as a nanny is certainly not a 9am to 5pm job in an office. A nanny job is more varied. There are also quite a number of opportunities to work as a part time nanny. Perhaps you are studying in the mornings and just looking for afternoon work minding children after school. Or maybe a part time weekend or summer nanny job suits your schedule better.

If you enjoy working with children, like variety and flexibility in your work, this is certainly a career worth considering.

Some of my friends are now working as professional nannies. They started out as au pairs and enjoyed working with families so much they are now happily working as nannies. An au pair is generally a young person who comes to live with a family to help out with caring for their children. The au pair maybe interested in spending time in a new country to improve their language skills. Becoming an au pair is an excellent way to experience life in a different country with the support of a host family. It’s also a great way to build your experience working with children.

A nanny is more experienced than an au pair and often has qualifications related to childcare, such as, first aid training, childcare certificates or perhaps home economics or cooking certificates. As with most careers, the more experience you have, the higher the salary you can earn.
